Satellite Summit
Solo Project ● Fortnite Battle Royale POI
LEVEL Summary
Satellite Summit is a medium-sized POI set atop an icy mountain, inspired by Arctic and Antarctic research facilities. Its landmark features are three massive radio satellites, and the POI utilizes verticality, multiple paths, and vantage points for both combat and scouting. The POI features nine structures, including a research center, a transit facility, a medical bay, and living quarters, each contributing to a cohesive space that promotes strategic movement, controlled sightlines, and varied engagement. The POI is designed to support both Build and Zero-Build Battle Royale game modes.
Responsibilities: Designed, iterated, set dressed, and playtested a Fortnite Battle Royale POI
Software Used: Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN), Miro, Adobe Illustrator

Satellites
Serve as the primary landmarks of the POI, making them highly visible from long distances and helping players orient themselves within the map
Positioned on the outer perimeter of the POI, reducing immediate exposure to central fights while still acting as strong rotational points
The top platform and dish offer a powerful height advantage and strong loot incentives, but very little cover
Limited traversal options up and down the structure (stairs, ascender, air vent, or zipline, depending on the satellite), creating intentional chokepoints
Predictable exits make players on top easy to track and punish, reinforcing counterplay for nearby attackers
Central Research Facility
Main POI building and most loot-dense structure, designed to attract heavy player traffic
Features 3 interior floors, a rooftop, and a radio tower for layered vertical gameplay
Open interior layout supports high player density by reducing chokepoints and keeping fights flowing
Rooftop cover provides protection while maintaining some exposed sightlines to prevent overly dominant positions
Radio tower is one of the highest points in the POI with strong sightlines but no cover; the rooftop air vent enables fast vertical access
Rear attached building offers a safer entry path, with sight blockers reducing rooftop overwatch and enabling rotation into the building
Circular interior layout ensures players are rarely cornered, with multiple escape routes that reduce camping effectiveness and increase flanking potential
Transit Facility
Second-largest POI building with a moderately open layout; less exposed than the Central Research Facility
First two floors have open sightlines; third floor is enclosed for controlled engagements
Two roof access routes: safer full interior path or faster, highly exposed second-floor route
Garage includes a second-floor jump-up balcony for added traversal options
Rooftop has strong cover toward Central Research Facility, limited cover toward lower buildings for balance
Circular layout reduces camping and supports flanking with multiple escape routes
Zipline to satellite dish offers fast rotation, but destination is highly exposed
Medical Bay
Third-largest POI building with a moderately open design, less exposed than the Central Research Facility and Transit Facility
Despite the tighter rooms, open wall and door pieces allow players to jump and shoot through them
Second-floor balcony provides direct access to the roof, with a chest reward; however, it is exposed to nearby living quarters and partially to the Central Research Facility rooftop, creating a risk–reward rotation path
Rooftop sits at a slightly lower elevation than the major surrounding buildings, so it has increased cover to reduce vulnerability to long-range rooftop fire
Proximity to a satellite tower allows players on top of the satellite to drop onto the roof with minimal fall damage, unlike other satellite-to-ground drops that are lethal
Living Quarters
Smaller buildings that are designed for safer, lower-loot landings compared to major POI structures
Large Unit: largest variant with slightly higher loot density and a semi-circular 3-room layout, including one dead-end room for light spatial variety in a low-traffic space
Elevated Unit: most centrally located variant with minimal loot; offers multiple safe rotation options despite its position
Perimeter Unit: most isolated and safest landing option with the lowest loot, designed for low-pressure early-game looting
Rooftops across all units provide moderate sightlines onto nearby road approaches, offering light awareness without strong combat dominance
Select rooftops include air vents enabling fast rotations toward satellite towers or the Central Research Facility, increasing mobility between POI buildings

Iterations
Satellite Placement Rework
Old
Having only a single large satellite reduced the overall uniqueness and identity of the POI
Fewer structures on the perimeter resulted in the center of the POI receiving too much attention, making it overly dangerous
New
Three large satellites strengthen the POI’s visual and thematic identity
Better reinforces the POI name and overall concept
Reduces focus on the center, shifting gameplay toward the perimeter
Creates more varied gameplay opportunities around the outer areas of the POI
Back Entrance Accessibility
Old
The back entrance was highly exposed with minimal cover
Players had to travel a significant distance after reaching ground level to access a building
Resulted in a vulnerable rotation path with limited survivability when entering from this side
New
Added a living quarters building near the back entrance
Reduced travel distance to safety for players entering from this direction
Introduced a lower-risk landing option outside of high-traffic, loot-dense areas
Added more cover to improve survivability during rotations through this entrance
Ground Cover Improvements
Old
Ground areas had limited cover, leaving players exposed while rotating between the three major POI buildings or entering/exiting through the front entrance
Existing rocks were too small to provide reliable protection against players with a significant height advantage
Few safe positions for players caught in open combat spaces
Limited options for disengaging or repositioning during fights
New
Added additional ground cover to reduce exposure across key areas and better protect players entering/exiting through the front entrance
Introduced a reboot van that also functions as a strong piece of cover
Increased the size of existing rocks to provide more reliable protection against players with a significant height advantage
Created more opportunities for safe repositioning and defensive play during engagements
